NBTE Releases Report of Institutional Ranking of Nigerian Polytechnics
Federal Polytechnics Nekede-Owerri, Ilaro and Kaduna Polytechnic emerge 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has released the report of the Pilot Institutional Ranking of Nigerian Polytechnics for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 academic years with Federal Polytechnics Nekede, Imo State; Ilaro, Ogun State and Kaduna Polytechnic emerging first, second and third positions respectively.

Speaking at the end of the 82nd Regular Meeting of the Governing Board of NBTE in Kaduna, the Executive Secretary, Dr. Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure said the ranking was based on eleven criteria consisting of total number of programmes with full accreditation by NBTE during the last two years, percentage of programmes with full accreditation by NBTE during the last two years, proportion of academic staff showing the right mix at the departmental level for institutions i.e. Chief Lecturer, principal lecturer and its equivalent down to the Assistant Lecturer or its equivalent, ability of institutions to introduce programmes in new and emerging fields.
Others are; capacity building of staff both within and outside Nigeria, teaching quality- including staff/student ratio, teaching quality – ratio of full-time to part-time staff, availability of current Campus Master Plan, Strategic Plan and Academic Brief, percentage of Academic Staff with relevant higher qualifications and professional registration, 70:30 Technology-Non-Technology enrolment ratio and incorporation of Entrepreneurship Education into the institution’s curriculum- fully established Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC).
Dr Kazaure further stated that the exercise covered a total of 112 polytechnics comprising federal, state and private that have commenced operation, adding that those that have not commenced operation by 2015/16 academic year are not included.
He stated that of the 112 polytechnics covered, federal polytechnics account for 27, state 42 and private 43; explaining that a rating of 0 -5 was used to score each criteria and weight of 1 – 3 was applied according to the relative importance of the criteria to arrive at total score obtained and the percentage score.
The result of ranking shows that forty (40) polytechnics scored 50% and above, eleven 60% and above and three had 70% and above.
The Federal Polytechnic Nekede that emerged first position scored 85.38% followed by Federal Polytechnic, Illaro 73.08% and Kaduna Polytechnic 72.31%. Federal polytechnics dominate the top ten positions with three state polytechnics, the Polytechnic Ibadan, Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, breaking in.
The top ten polytechnics in the ranking include; Federal Polytechnic Nekede (1st), Federal Polytechnic, Illaro (2nd), Kaduna Polytechnic Kaduna (3rd), The Polytechnic Ibadan (4th), Federal polytechnic Bida (5th), Auchi Polytechnic Auchi (6th), Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu (7th), Federal Polytechnic Offa Kwara State, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo, and Yaba College of Technology (8th), Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State (9th) and Federal Polytechnic Idah, Kogi State (10th).
The highest ranked private polytechnic is Lagos City Polytechnic which makes the cut at 14th position, while The Polytechnic Ibadan, IMT Enugu and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo took the highest ranking positions amongst state polytechnics, having generated 67.69%, 62.31% and 60.77% respectively. Among the private polytechnics that took second and third positions after Lagos City Polytechnic (1st) are Doben Polytechnic, Bwari Abuja (2nd) and Heritage Polytechnic, Eket Akwa Ibom State (3rd).
